Submission Instructions

These instruction must be followed in submitting FLAS fellowship applications (download a copy here). Questions regarding the application procedures and materials can be addressed to any of the Centers below or emailed to FLAS-Fellowships@illinois.edu. You should also review the application procedures for the particular Center to which you are applying.

What, When, and Where of Application Submission

  1. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Refer to the Cover Sheet for a checklist.

  2. FLAS Applications must be submitted by YOUR home department.

  3. Applications are due from the home department no later than 5:00 pm, Friday, 13 February 2009.

  4. Check with your department for their internal deadline.
    (Spanish, Italian, Portuguese—20 January)
    (School of Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics—30 January)

  5. Read the eligibility requirements and fellowship requirements below before applying.

  6. Check with each Center's web site for Center specific application criteria.

  7. Complete the on-line application form (incoming graduate students should check with their admitting department for instructions).

  8. Prepare a complete set of supporting documents for each Center to which you are applying.

  9. DO NOT STAPLE your documents; each application must be bound with a paper clip or binder clip.

FLAS Eligibility

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.

  • You must be currently enrolled as a graduate student OR have been admitted to a graduate program.

Fellowships Requirements

  1. You must be a graduate student in good standing.

  2. You must be enrolled full-time (twelve credit hours) each semester.

  3. You must be enrolled for graded credit in formal language instruction in the language of the award as well as in an international or area studies course.

  4. You must complete a student performance report at the beginning and end of each award period.
